Using
WhisperKB

Choose your hotkeys once, then use them whenever you want to dictate.

  1. Choose your shortcut

    Open WhisperKB, choose a hold-to-talk or toggle shortcut, then press Start.

  2. Click where you want the text

    Place your cursor in a message, document, email, or open game-chat box.

  3. Record, then review

    Hold your shortcut while you speak, then release it to transcribe. With a toggle shortcut, press once to start and again to finish. You can review the text before sending it yourself.

If a game doesn’t accept pasted text, switch to simulated typing so WhisperKB enters your words as key presses.

Compatibility varies because some games block simulated input.

A few details about setup, privacy, and everyday use.

What do I need?

You’ll need Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), a microphone, and enough space for a speech model. English is currently supported, and the model recommended by the installer is a good place to start.

An NVIDIA GPU can speed up transcription, though CPU fallback is available if you don’t have one. Larger models may take longer to run and need several GB beyond the roughly 316 MB installer.

Does my voice leave my computer?

WhisperKB runs speech recognition on your PC and does not send your audio to a transcription service.

You’ll need internet to download the app and its models, but once they’re installed you can use voice typing offline.

Can I use a toggle instead of holding a key?

Yes, set a toggle shortcut and press it once to start recording, then again to finish. You can also keep a separate hold-to-talk shortcut.

Is it really free?

Official releases are free for personal, educational, accessibility, and internal work use, with no subscription.

WhisperKB is source-available, so you can read the code and check the WhisperKB license for its usage terms.
